A general relaxation massage using oil to avoid friction. Gliding and kneading strokes will ease away muscular tension, reducing stress hormones, thereby releasing enkephalins (pain reducing hormone).
This will assist the body to relax and resume restorative sleep patterns.

Many of us have argued over the concept of “alternative” versus “complementary” medicine when it comes to massage therapy. Massage can be used as an alternative to narcotics, steroid injections, and surgery, but it can also be used as a complement to allopathic medicine to speed healing and reduce pain should surgery be necessary. Massage facilitates a body-mind-spirit balance, allowing the body to tap into its own recuperative powers. For clients who are afraid of doctors, it provides a useful alternative, along with diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors, to help keep them healthy. For those who are actively under a physician’s care, massage helps minimize complications and provide the best possible outcome. It is well established as useful for musculo-skeletal issues such as low back and neck pain. Rather than belabor the argument of alternative versus complementary medicine, it is useful to apply the concept of prevention to a massage therapy practice.

Starting with soothing strokes of gliding and kneading, compression and percussion will also be added to either stimulate or sedate the desired muscle or muscle groups. Stretching and lengthening techniques will be used along with Muscle Energy Techniques. The goal is to facilitate normal resting muscle length and correct muscle imbalances. Kinetic chain and firing patterns will be observed.

Loretta Ulibarri, 49, is training for her 49th marathon this summer, which will put her on target to reach 50 marathons by her 50th birthday. Achieving this feat, which has sometimes required tackling four marathons a year, took more than guts, grit, and lots of running shoes. "If it weren't for massage, I wouldn't be able to do this," says Ulibarri, who lives in Denver. "I had a lot of inflammation problems and ongoing soreness that interfered with my training. Ten years ago, I started getting a sports massage every three weeks, and since then, I've been injury-free and able to train year-round.

"Since I started getting massages five years ago, the chronic tightness in my calves has disappeared, and I'm not getting injured." And the practice has medical-community support as well. "Massage is probably the best way to prevent delayed onset muscle soreness," says Lewis G. Maharam, M.D., medical director for the New York Road Runners.

Massage therapy also works on the psychological and physiological levels. Clearing the metabolic waste from the muscles helps the entire body function optimally.

Young Living Essential Oils

Medicinal and therapeutic grade essential oils will be used in a sequence that will effectively balance and rejuvenate the mind and body. When properly applied to the neck back and feet, these essential oils can bring about electrical alignment and help relieve a variety of discomforts due to imbalances in the spine.

Raindrop TechniqueTM is a truly remarkable procedure that combines a variety of energy medicine and natural medicine modalities. Developed by D. Gary Young in the 1980's, it includes the use of several antibacterial essential oils (both as aromatics and as direct topical agents) effleurage or finger-stroking, massage through a series of specific techniques for the spinal muscles, and moist heat via warm compress. Since its development over 20 years ago it has brought relief to thousands suffering chronic back pain and has saved many from expensive surgical procedures.

A 2001 study at the University of Miami School of Medicine compared massage therapy to relaxation therapy and concluded:

"Participants receiving massage therapy reported experiencing less pain, depression, anxiety and their sleep had improved along with decreased pain, improved trunk flexion and both serotonin and dopamine levels were higher"

A general relaxation massage combined with stimulation to the reflexive points of the hands and feet. Since we hold all of our tension in these areas when released, the body can begin to reset itself (as in defragging a computer) and begin to function optimally; harmony within the body and it's interdependent systems can be restored.

Research studies in the U.S. and around the world indicate positive benefits of reflexology for various conditions. In particular, there are several well-designed studies, funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health that indicate reflexology's promise as an intervention to reduce pain and enhance relaxation, sleep, and the reduction of psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression.

In addition, Chinese research literature on reflexology contains more than 300 studies that show its effectiveness in 95% of more than 18,000 cases covering 64 different illnesses.

Here are some research examples that show reflexology to be effective for a wide variety of health concerns.

  • Anxiety
  • Cancer Treatment
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Diabetes Type II
  • Migraine/Tension Headache
  • Kidney Function
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
